As a woman, we are good at many things, keeping lots of balls in the air, and tending many hearths.
One hearth might be our family, another may be our work, or home, another our friendships, the ever-demanding “to-do” list, not to mention, our own self-care.
Many days, the day runs out before we get to it all. And we’re often last on the list, which can be quite frustrating.
Our head drives us to do, and be more, while our heart beckons us to slow down, or at least take a rest here and there.
Every woman must find her own rhythm, but I can honestly say in my almost 6 decades on the planet, that keeping my cup full, as a PRIORITY, is the best investment across the board.
Every spiritual tradition speaks of this concept, and that nothing good comes from scraping the bottom of the barrel. Sure, it’s unavoidable every once in a while, but it can’t be the way we live, or it’ll catch up with us. In that catching up, we’ll be strongly encouraged to consider alternatives that are life-giving, nourishing, gentler, and more cup-filling than draining.
Being aware of this pervasive underlying fear of not getting the job done (read: not getting to everything on the to-do list), fear of being ‘not enough’, fear of missing out, or of not being productive enough are pitfalls and while seductive, can lead us to push, overwork and overschedule. A recipe for an empty cup of dissatisfaction and overwhelm.
While I’ve gotten better at not ‘driving’ myself, and weaving in rest, another insidious element that sneaks in is thinking I “should” be doing something different than what I’m doing. As if what I’m doing isn’t the right thing or good enough. I work with that one very regularly. Mindfulness, staying present, and trusting I’m doing the exact right thing at the moment are constant reminders I reach for.
This kind of thing is mostly, cultural programming. Like a virus in a computer running the show. And…there is a way to rewire the circuitry and access a different choice. It’s a practice
Including our Heart in the choices in front of us gives us access to Divine Wisdom and Guidance that are nourishing (because that’s how the Heart likes to roll :)), if you’re interested in how to do that, I invite you to watch a 45min. class on the subject of this blog (including inner guidance). Click Here for Class.
When we practice partnering with the wisdom of our body and deep cellular intelligence, it builds confidence and trust, it shows us our best choices on every subject. It can even change our relationship with time and energy allowing time and energy to serve us rather than feeling like we’re a victim of ‘not enough’ time or energy.
This wisdom teaches us a balance between notes and rests, just like music. Without both, there’s no music.
I have come to discover that connecting to this guidance is like having a GPS, it shows us the right turns, the alternate routes, and heads us back in the right direction if we get lost. This inner guidance is a gift from grace herself, and we must engage it.
In our class, Susana and I talk about how to manage the mind, how to connect your energy system to the Earth and to the Cosmos which gives us access to a peaceful center and strength that we could use more of in our days.
We talk about the pitfalls and obstacles that are common to women with a lot on their plate, as well as some helpful ideas for moving through life with more ease. All without adding to your ‘to-do’ list!
