What REALLY Happens in a Creative Process?
Once your mind gets past, “I’m not creative”, and becomes willing to explore just a little, something good opens in the heart and soul. This happens for everybody, no exceptions.
I’ve said this before…I’ve been exposed to a LOT of options for healing over my 31 years as a healer, and a regular creative practice is one of the best there is. It gives more return on your investment of resources in the shortest amount of time than anything else I’ve seen. And it’s also more fun.
Think: a therapists office for years to work out why mom (or that teacher, fill in the blank) did what they did….OR….a creative journal that can work out anything and everything in a matter of just a couple of pages. Really, it can be that simple.
Trauma, PTSD, emotional pain, mental spin, physical ailments, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, worry, even the disbelief that you have a creative bone in your body can be worked out in a visual journal. In fact, your bones are made from the same creative life force that creates worlds. So, yes, you have creative bones in your body, 206 creative bones to be exact!
By the way, a sketchbook, creative journal, and visual journal mean the same thing: a place to intentionally and creatively heal and transform any aspect of your mind, body, and life.
“The Soul Speaks in Image” ~ Carl Jung
You already do this in a dominantly left-brain capacity. You have to-do lists, notes, maybe even tracking and/or spreadsheets to help keep yourself together. And they work, take away a women’s to-do list and she might combust! They hold things together.
Beyond ‘holding things together’ is a domain of exploration, release, healing, and freedom that every soul craves. Enter the Creative Journal. An invitation to your right-brain to come out a play more. Mental, emotional, and physical harmony are a by-product of left and right brain balance. Every human I know is seeking balance and harmony, also called Masculine/Feminine Balance. When more of us than not, live in this harmony, the world will too.
We creatively engage because it:
- Builds new brain tracks and increases brain function
- Calms the mind and settles emotions
- Cultivates a connection to Self, Others, and Life
- Finds solutions to problems
- Gives our soul a way to access the Sacred (both masculine and feminine)
- Gives our humanity a way to evolve
- Builds confidence and courage
- Increases peace and calm
- Builds the muscle of being in the present moment (a vital skill)
- Strengthens immune function
- Improves adrenal function and regulates cortisol
In addition to being an integral part of the constitutionally protected right to freedom of expression, creative expression is critical to the human spirit, the development of healthy culture, and well functioning democratic societies.
While dedicated creativity time is as vital as a walk in nature, or a shower, it’s everyday creativity that most of us ache for. A creative practice, even done in small snippets of time, informs your daily life in surprisingly good ways. Research is absolutely clear on this, see more here.
Women are salvaging relationships, increasing their income, healing bodily problems, eliminating worry (really), and discovering joyful ways to improve the world. Your sketchbook is literally a reservoir of personal medicine.
